The Role of Arts in Shaping Society

Art has the power to shape our society. Based on Thesaurus, art is define as the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance. However, to me, the best person to define what art is,
is you.

To be completely honest, everything in this world can be considered as arts. From singing to dancing and also to acting. Not to forget, the paintings and graffiti. All these can influence and shape the society. In my opinion, the most powerful form of art is music. Music can impact the culture, moral and emotion of our society.

The cultural aspect of our society can be reflected by the popular music of today. The fingerprints of our generation can be seen in the lyrics of the song. It can be said that culture and music flow together. What the elders used to dance and sing to, today’s generation would consider as lame. It has nothing to do the music. It is just a representation that things around us are constantly changing. With that being said, we need to be conscious of our modern day culture and also be purposeful with the cultures we want to create and elevate with our music.

There are so many factors in building their moral, especially for teens. The morals and behaviour are not completely caused by the lyrics they are listening to, however, music most definitely play a crucial role in determining what might be right or wrong. Due to this, we need to be cautious about the messages that we are putting in our songs. In all styles of music nowadays, there are plenty of songs with lyrics that glorify sex, drugs, and violence. While research can't concretely link the cause-and-effect behaviour of listening to these songs with directly influence this type of behaviour, many people agree that it surely encourages it.

Music has the ability to alter our emotion. Most of us would listen to music whenever we can. So, the impact of music on us are huge. To summarize, music has the ability to influence our society culturally, morally, and emotionally. Therefore, the more intentional we are when creating our music, the more powerful we will become in making impacts. Music can change the world due to its big influence and we should never underestimate how powerful music can be in the minds of the listeners.
