"The best way to judge a person’s character is by looking at their appearance"

“The best way to judge a person’s character is by looking at their appearance.”  I completely disagree with this statement. It has some sort of connection with the saying “Never judge a book by its cover.” Why would we assume about one’s character by just looking at his or her appearance? Why wouldn’t we learn more about someone before judging them?

Unfortunately,
we often judge a person’s character by their appearance and we are always so wrong about them. Their real personality comes out when you truly know them. The sad thing about this is that most of the time when we learn about their “real selves”, it’s completely different from what we thought about them initially. When we think someone is arrogant, they turn out to be the friendliest person that you have ever met and then the ones who we thought are the nicest person on earth turns out to be a devil in disguise.

To be honest, for me, judging a person’s character by looking at their appearance is the same as prejudice. Prejudice is defined as a prejudgement or forming an opinion before becoming aware of the relevant facts of a case. It is the same thing, isn’t it? When we form a preconceived opinion on someone, we are being prejudice. It is extremely important to bear in mind that not all what we see is the truth.

Everyone needs to realize that appearance means nothing. What if the person you see with a bad appearance do not want to look like that? What is they do not have a choice? What if they cannot afford to buy stuffs to make their appearance better? Or maybe they just do not care what they look like because they do not dress to impress. When you start thinking “That person looks really…” you need to stop and remember all the possible reasons they look like that. Maybe they’re comfortable.

“And even if you do wear a maid outfit, it doesn't change the fact that you're strong or that you're smart or that you try really hard at everything you do. I think you'd still deserve to walk with your head held high.” is a quote by Hiro Fujiwara which I think really suits this topic. Everyone deserve to choose their own appearance without getting judged by the others. People can choose what they look like. It does not matter at all as it is not what’s on the outside, but what’s on the inside. So, the best way to judge a person’s character is not by looking at their appearance but by understanding and knowing them personally.
